Baraba (バラバ, Baraba) is a Terrible-Monster that first appeared in Ultraman Ace.

  • Subtitle: Hitman Terrible-Monster (殺し屋超獣, Koroshi-ya Chojū)

History[]

Ultraman Ace[]

Baraba was created by the Yapool using their science to transform a Swallowtail Caterpillar into a terrible-monster. The beast's presence was first felt where it attacked two boys on a paper route, killing one of them before disappearing. Later after Ace and the Ultra Brothers were tricked into traversing to Planet Golgotha, Yapool unleashed Baraba in the middle of Tokyo, where it was protected by a radioactive rainstorm. TAC was quick to respond to the terrible-monster's attack, but Yapool's generated rain protected Baraba from their weapons, and Ace's absence allowed the beast to continue its attack unopposed.

Eventually after being given enough of the Ultra Brothers' energy to return to Earth (Ace had expended most of his own in order to get to Golgotha), Ace immediately confronted the terrible-monster. After briefly saving a boy as Hokuto and Minami (the same boy whom Baraba attacked earlier but did not kill), both of them transformed into Ultraman Ace once more to stop Baraba. Yapool's rain protection did little to help Baraba against Ace, and the ultra easily manhandled the terrible-monster. However before the ultra could finish it off, they were both confronted by Yapool, who threatened to kill the captured Ultra Brothers should Ace kill Baraba. Unwilling to let his comrades get hurt, but with no other option, Ace was at the mercy of Baraba, who beat down the ultra until its detacted sword struck him with the terrible-monster's shock ray. His body surrounded by a strange light, Ace faded from view. Baraba was victorious.[1][Execution! The Five Ultra Brothers]

Sometime later after Hokuto was launched into space on the Superluminal Missile #7, Baraba returned to earth to resume its attack on Tokyo. Once again, TAC was quick to respond to the terrible-monster's attack, but even without Yapool's generated rain protecting Baraba, their weapons were no match against the beast, who continued its attack. However, someone who was a match for Baraba soon arrived: Ultraman Ace (who had just returned to Earth after rescuing his brothers and destroyed Ace Killer on Planet Golgotha). No longer being threatened by Yapool, Ace once again managed to beat down the terrible-monster, and despite Baraba gaining a temporary advantage over the ultra by weakening him with his Shock Ray, Ace fought through. Finally after stabbing the terrible-monster with its own sword and dislodging its eyeballs from its sockets, Ace finished off Baraba by slicing off its bladed left hand and decapitating him with it.[1][5 Stars Scattered in the Galaxy]

Ultraman Ginga Theater Special[]

Baraba was one of the many monsters (and ultras) who were transformed into spark dolls during the Dark Spark War. Although not making a physical appearance itself, the terrible-monster's spark doll was discovered by Hikaru and Chigusa while they and their friends were exploring Mt. Furuboshi. However, the spark doll (along with Hanzagiran, King Crab, Bemstar, Seagoras, and Red King) were taken by Alien Icarus, who would then DarkLive with all of the procured spark dolls, transforming himself into Tyrant. However after Alien Icarus and Tyrant were both destroyed by Ultraman Tiga (Lived by Hikaru) and Jean-Nine, Baraba's spark doll was returned to normal and was gathered up by Hikaru and his friends.[Ultraman Ginga Theater Special]

Ultraman Z[]

Barabas in Z

Baraba, as seen in Ultraman Z.

A new Baraba was created from residual energy left over from Yapool's essence.[2] The beast's presence was first felt during a fight between Bemstar, Windom, and King Joe STORAGE Custom, where one of Yapool's portals broke the sky open over Tokyo and frightened Bemstar into fleeing Earth for its life. Time passed as STORAGE kept a close eye on its portal until eventually, Baraba made its appearance by landing in the heart of the city. Detecting Ace's presence in Haruki's Ultra Medal of Ace, Baraba immediately attacked Windom, disabling King Joe STORAGE Custom with little effort in the process. Fearing for the lives of his teammates, Haruki transformed into Ultraman Z, immediately going straight to his Delta Rise Claw form to battle the terrible-monster. However, Baraba's above-average strength from being a terrible-monster allowed the beast to not only disarm Z of Beliarok, quickly putting the ultra at a disadvantage, but its plethora of new abilities quickly overwhelmed Z, weakening him until he was powered down to his original form.

Suddenly just as Baraba was about to deliver the killing blow, Z was saved by the arrival of a returning ultra that Baraba recognized: Ultraman Ace. Baraba immediately attacked its old foe, but the veteran ultra was able to stand strong against the terrible-monster, bombarding it with a plethora of his own attacks without showing any fear. Hoping to help his superior, Z switched to his Beta Smash form and armed himself with his Z Lance Arrow. The two ultras fought fiercely against Baraba, but the terrible-monster was just as resilient as ever, even with their combined teamwork. Getting an idea, Ace had Baraba distracted while Z charged his energy into the holes on his head. Once the ultra was fully-charged, Ace incapacitated Baraba with his Stop Rings and passed the energy of his Space Q attack onto Z. Converting the energy into his own, the attack was turned into the Space Z attack, which Z launched at the Baraba, bisecting the terrible-monster up the middle. After Baraba's destruction, all that was left of the terrible-monster was the sword on its head.[The Last Hero]

When it was learned that the sword carried the same interdimensional energy that Baraba and the Yapool possessed, it would be used by STORAGE as both part of King Joe STORAGE Custom's arsenal,[D4] as well as Ultroid Zero's weaponry.[Individual Tomorrows][Prelude to a Nightmare]

Ultraman Regulos[]

While battling against a newly-empowered Ultraman Regulos, Volcan the Alien Magma summoned a Baraba that he had procured from the Yapool in a desperate attempt to destroy the ultra. Regulos and Baraba appeared to be evenly matched at first until the Terrible-Monster began fighting back with its plethora of abilities, putting Regulos at a disadvantage. Before the ultra could be finished off by Baraba's head blade however, Regulos was saved by the Cosmo Beasts of his fallen fellow Fighters: Albeo and Pharood. Utilizing their Cosmo Beasts' power of wind and water, Regulos quickly dispelled Baraba's attacks, and he destroyed the Terrible-Monster with his Spirit Crane & Water Snake Strike.

Notes[]

  • Baraba is named after "Barabbas," a prisoner in the Bible who Pontius Pilate released after the people of Jerusalem chose to have Jesus Christ be crucified on the cross instead of Barabbas. The reference of Baraba's name also reflected on the events that take place in Baraba's episode role, where Ultraman Ace was forced to fight him to protect the Earth, rather than save the other ultra brothers, who were about to be killed (and hung on crucifixions made for them) by Yapool on Planet Golgotha.
  • Baraba's arms and "hands" would later become part of the monster, Tyrant, from Ultraman Taro. However, there are some distinct differences in design between Tyrant's hands and Baraba's hands.
    • Baraba's blade is his left hand and his mace is his right hand. Also, Baraba's mace contains less spikes adorning it, and his grappling hook feature looks moreso like a grappling hook while its rope feature being thicker in width.
    • Tyrant's blade is his right hand and his mace is his left hand. Also, Tyrant's mace contains more spikes adorning it, and his grappling hook feature looks moreso like an anchor while its rope feature being thinner in width.
  • Although not seen in the film, Baraba is one of the monsters that makes up the left arm of Belyudra in Mega Monster Battle: Ultra Galaxy Legend The Movie.
