Hanzagiran (ハンザギラン, Hanzagiran) is a Terrible-Monster that first appeared in Ultraman Ace.

  • Subtitle: Fluid Terrible-Monster (液汁超獣, Ekijū Chojū)

History[]

Ultraman Ace[]

Hanzagiran was originally a normal salamander named "Shobei" (ショウベイ, Shoubei), who was owned by a girl named Sayuri and her grandfather, Sakagami. After its species was wiped out by pesticides that were sprayed all over its forest home, the animal was taken in by the man and girl, where it was raised in a dark cave. Whenever Shobei ventured out of its cavern though, the salamander transformed into the Terrible-Monster, Hanzagiran, after being exposed to the sun's rays. The beast first attacked Hinohara Village, but disappeared by the time TAC arrived to investigate. It wasn't until the next day when Sakagami and Sayuri were taking Shobei out for a walk when the salamander transformed into Hanzagiran once more. Fearing what could happen to the villagers, Sayuri played her flute for the beast (which she often used to charm her pet), and this caused Hanzagiran to regress back into Shobei once again. Despite his granddaughter saving Hinohara Village, Sakagami became maniacal. Seeing Shobei's transformation, and remembering everything he had given up and lost trying to save the salamanders from the village's pesticides, Sakagami took Shobei out for another walk while Sayuri was asleep and unleashed Hanzagiran onto Hinohara Village as vengeance.

After TAC learned of the Terrible-Monster's return, they were quick to respond to Hanzagiran's attack. Although their weapons were able to damage the beast, Hanzagiran's life force allowed it to take TAC's physical assaults without permanently harming it, and the beast's acidic spray was able to take down their jets. Hanzagiran's rampage continued until the monster began to threaten Sayuri as well. Horrified, Sakagami tried to save his granddaughter by trying to regain control of the Terrible-Monster with their flute, but the beast destroyed the instrument and murdered the madman with his acidic spray as well. Turning its sights back onto Sayuri, Hanzagiran resumed trying to kill her, but was confronted by the timely arrival of Ultraman Ace. Like with TAC, Ace had difficulty standing up to Hanzagiran thanks to the beast's life force allowing it to withstand the ultra's physical assaults. Despite this, Ace continued fighting, and after trapping the Terrible-Monster inside his Ace Barrier attack, Hanzagiran was cut off from the sun's rays, transforming the beast back into Shobei once more. With the salamander weakened, TAC built a wall around Shobei's cave, stopping the animal from transforming ever again. [Curse of The Salamander]

Ultraman Ginga Theater Special[]

Hanzagiran was one of the many monsters (and ultras) who were transformed into spark dolls during the Dark Spark War. Although not making a physical appearance itself, the terrible-monster's spark doll was discovered by Misuzu and Kenta while they and their friends were exploring Mt. Furuboshi. However, the spark doll (along with King Crab, Bemstar, Seagoras, Red King, and Baraba) were taken by Alien Icarus, who would then DarkLive with all of the procured spark dolls, transforming himself into Tyrant. However after Alien Icarus and Tyrant were both destroyed by Ultraman Tiga (Lived by Hikaru) and Jean-Nine, Hanzagiran's spark doll was returned to normal and was gathered up by Hikaru and his friends. Abilities[]

  • Acid Spray: Hanzagiran can fire a stream of white-colored acid from its mouth. This acid is strong enough to melt flesh and stone in seconds.
  • Tear Gas: Hanzagiran can release a white tear gas-esque smoke from its body, blinding its opponents and allowing the Terrible-Monster to escape.
  • Life Force: Being a giant salamander by nature, Hanzagiran's life force is stated to be incredibly resilient. Able to take physical damage without slowing down or feeling any pain.
  • Sunlight Absorbtion: Being raised in darkness for most of its life, Shobei will transform into Hanzagiran when exposed to enough sunlight. The Terrible-Monster can turn back into Shobei as well when Sayuri's flute is played for it.
Weakness

Without the sun's rays, Hanzagiran will transform back into Shobei until it can absorb more rays. Additionally, Sayuri's flute can essentially control the Terrible-Monster when played, but it has its limitations.

Behind the Scenes[]

Portrayal[]

Notes[]

  • Hanzagiran's spikes would later become part of the chimera monster, Tyrant, from Ultraman Taro.
    • Ironically, Tyrant's tail also bares a resemblance to Hanzagiran's tail as well, despite that many sources state that King Crab's tail is what makes up Tyrant's tail instead. A possible reason for this could be because Tyrant's originally concept art depicts Hanzagiran's tail being used for Tyrant's tail instead.
